I swear my paper's score dropped two points since last I looked at it. That's how badly it sucks.
Just kidding. It's "beautifully written" but beauty in itself isn't enough to get me through this class. While going over the comments, I found what I expected to find: plenty of "expand" and "support" notes. But I was pained (though not necessarily surprised) to read that I'd fallen into plot summary. Horror struck is more like it.
There's only one explanation: some terrible disease has taken over me that blurs the lines between plot summary and analysis! O the dreaded plot summary. Somewhere in the ghettos of Atlanta encased within the private school walls of Luvit, Swartz is cries out in agony.
Lezbehonest
I read and analyzed "Teenage Wasteland" so excessively that my mind responded the only way it knew how--by mutinying against me like some sleazy First Mate.
Here's what I meant to write:
Concerning the first part of my paper lacking support:
"Matt and Daisy have not attempted to directly connect with Donny's thoughts and feelings."
The story surrounds Donny's experiences over the course of a year. It tells of Donny's downward spiral. But he doesn't talk for the first page and a half. He's not even introduced by name until after Daisy. Donny is the center of the conflict in the story but the conflict isn't about him as it should be: it's about Daisy. Her insecurity debilitates her. She doesn't once talk to Donny about his behavior. She doesn't ask him what's going on in that head of his, how he is doing, why he's acting up, or what he thinks about seeing a psychologist. The first words that come out of his mouth express opinion and he is immediately shut down. That neglect and the miscommunication that stems from it all contribute to Donny's destruction. He is a boy shuffled from one expert to another--from the principal to the psychologist to Cal to the teacher, back to Cal... He has absolutely no say in his life. His parents are oblivious. And that is why Donny gives himself to Cal so quickly and so easily. He is looking for a person of authority to fill the hole left by his mentally absentee parents.
That's what I meant.
Thesis: the seasons coincide with Donny's transformation into adulthood in a perverse, backwards way which symbolizes the mal effects of misguidance on the child.
In a nut shell: Fall, the traditional time of "winding down," of harvest, the preparation before the icy death grip of winter, is Donny's first step in the cycle. Instead of spring, which is the beginning of life and the traditional first stage in the seasons cycle, Donny begins backwardly at the end of life. It's a dark premonition of his fate. Essentially, Donny's going down a bad path. Literally the path to death, as autumn is the path to winter.
(I hope I'm not rambling. I honestly can't tell.)
Fall's the time when Daisy and Matt really needed to step up and take charge. But they failed. Cue the snowstorms and the spooky power outages as Cal, the embodiment of harsh reality, enters and infects Donny's life. Donny goes from averagely troubled teen who still looks to parents for guidance to stone-faced, icy stranger who replaces Daisy's position of authority with Cal. These are the cold, dark times of uncertainty in which Daisy literally knows nothing about the occurrences in her son's life. It's no accident that the catalyst for Donny's childhood death appears in the season of death.
Spring, the traditional season of life, acts as Fall in Donny's growth. The precursor to his death. The story began with a call from the principle citing minor misbehavior and has evolved to this point in which the principle calls citing Donny's expulsion. Spring then marks the end of Donny's time in private school and his time with Cal, but it also functions as a misfire: Donny has a chance to start over, to begin a new life in public school but after the drama he has been through the new start fails, an indication that Daisy's actions come too late, that Donny is too far along in his deformed transformation to go back now. It's the dawn of the new Donny, the Donny who does what he's told but experiences no joy in anything. He makes no friends. He is exhausted and resigned. These are qualities of autumn which is the old man in the stage of life. The whole play on seasons is ironic and it serves to underscore the perversity of forsaking parental authority in favor of outside influence.
Then he runs away. He runs away because he's lost. He prematurely matured. The whole thing is jenk.
I had trouble forming my thoughts concisely with this paper and I'm not sure if I was concise in the material I just wrote but I guess the most important element I have to work on is concision and analysis.
I'm confused.
